WINNING TOGETHER IN COVID-19 PANDEMIC: TRADE UNIONS AS BUSINESS PARTNER

The management’s desire and drive for cooperation and show of understanding from the trade unions in this trying and strange time cannot be overemphasised. As a critical stakeholder in employee relations management, and sustainable productivity, trade unions engagements, including industrial relations management have become important considerations in every organisation’s Business Continuity Plan.

Industrial peace and harmonious industrial relations, especially in a unionised business environment, is a sine qua non to sustainable productivity and increased profitability. Employer-Employee relationship involves two parties with diametrically opposed interests. While the employer (represented by the management) expects to secure labour at the lowest possible price, the workers(represented by trade unions) expects, interalia, real wages to be increased steadily including better terms and conditions of employment, and job security. The current Covid-19 pandemic and the attendant adverse effects on businesses continue to be a potential source of conflicts between management and trade unions, especially as many corporate organisations have started taking measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on their businesses, especially the challenge of accumulating and rising labour costs. Among the measures currently been taken by corporate organisations to reduce their labour costs include wage cut and declaration of redundancies. The role of the trade unions in today’s business world is fast changing from the orthodox “opposition leader” stand to that of a business partner, and a stakeholder in the profitability and success of the company.
It is important that every unionised corporate organisation keeps their in-house union executives and officers informed of the dynamics of today’s changing world of work including its implications for the working people. The increasing job contractions in virtually all the sectors of the economy and the consequential wage distortions and redundancies have implications for industrial relations. A culture where collective bargaining negotiations between management and trade unions also take forever is not healthy for business, and this calls for a review of the companies industrial relations system and practices.

Disruptive labour disputes and industrial actions are taking its tolls on productivity and profitability, and as such every organisation must evolve sustainable strategies to create a culture of industrial harmony and an environment where the management and the trade unions see themselves as strategic partners in driving the organisations corporate goals even amid the current increasingly challenging and very uncertain time.
